The construction of sustainable rural development in the brazilian Semiarid region poses the major challenge of adopting a concept of coexistence with the region. In view of this, the article investigated agroecological Family Agroforestry Systems in the context of the environment, farming families and society, in order to identify their strategic role in building this development in the rural environment of the Sertão do Pajeú micro-region in Pernambuco. Based on the research techniques of Fieldwork and Participatory Research associated with the applied scientific method, elements were revealed that made it possible to conclude that this construction involves a change in the production model and that the agroecological SAF presents itself as a sustainable technology that proves that it is possible to produce diversified food associated with the balanced use of natural resources and as a viable technology to reverse and reduce the majority of environmental problems within the production unit, revealing itself as an undeniable strategy to lead to sustainable rural development.
