Abstract

Objective: This article analyzes the marital changes that occurred after a diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. Method: This is a basic research with a qualitative approach. Nine HIV-positive people who participate in a Support Group for HIV carriers in a municipality in Santa Catarina, Brazil, were interviewed. The data were analyzed according to the assumptions of the thematic categorical analysis of content. Results: A diversity of manifestations and changes in sexual relationships was identified after diagnosis. Some respondents stopped having sex or showed a decrease in sexual activity. They also reported the fear of infecting other people. Conclusion: Despite negative feelings such as jealousy, hurt, revolt, anger, disappointment, detachment permeated the reports, the support of the spouse regarding the performance of the treatment did not cease to exist.
