Abstract

The precariousness of basic sanitation services, especially in the North region, is considered a serious problem as it is directly related to the occurrence of diseases. In this sense, the present study aimed to describe the occurrences of Diseases Related to Inadequate Environmental Sanitation (DRSAI) in the municipality of Concórdia do Pará, from 2001 to 2010, in order to know, through the elaboration of indicators of mortality and morbidity, the degree of epidemiological vulnerability due to the insufficiency in the attendance by sanitary sewage services. The DRSAI “Diarrhoea and gastroenteritis”, “Amoebiasis”, “Dengue”, “Leishmaniasis” and “Other intestinal infectious diseases” were selected for having a more significant number of occurrences in the study site. For the elaboration of the indicators, demographic data, sewage data and data related to deaths and hospitalizations due to DRSAI were collected on the IBGE, DeepAsk and DATASUS platforms, respectively. The results showed that certain hospitalizations and deaths due to DRSAI may be related to the ICSES sewage system coverage rate (%). However, some of the data used may be subject to failures, as there may be underreporting and sub registration of deaths and hospitalizations in the public health network. Thus, the use of complementary methodologies, such as the collection of primary data, is recommended in order to obtain more consistent results.

Key words: Sanitary sewage. Environmental sanitation. Epidemiological vulnerability.
