This article seeks to elaborate on some elements that could provide a framework for the reasons for the defeat of the political left in the contemporary world. To this end, it mobilizes some notions dear to modernity: progress, acceleration and revolution. It aims to establish a zone of dialogue between Traverso's hypotheses regarding melancholy, a historical characteristic of the left, and Berardi's ideas that point to the present as a reality without a future. Perhaps the key to interpreting the historical defeat of the left, which has lasted forty years, lies in this articulation.
Key words: political left; progress; acceleration; future; defeat.
